Traditional storytelling from different cultures, interpretation of a classical cultural tale from diverse cultures ( Focus on Europe, Asia, Africa) Building narrative structure through physical tableaux, evoking emotion, establishing mood, and creating a shared emotional experience for an audience. To using both theatre and music as way to enrich the retelling of a story.
Factual - What are the essential components of an effective story? Factual - What are the skills and techniques an actor can develop in order to modulate his/her voice (for character interpretation)? Conceptual - How can our personal and cultural expressions influence our interpretation of a story? An audience's reaction? Conceptual - How can asking "what if" drive the imagination of storytelling? Debatable - Does the composition of a story change the meaning of it?
Crit Ai -Investigating - investigate a story telling tradition and relate this to the statement of inquiry as part of their Arts Journal. Crit Bi- Developing - practically explore ideas to inform development of a final performance. Crit C - To create/perform a live group performance. Crit Dii- Evaluating- reflect on their development as an artist.
This unit is designated as our service learning unit. We are providing a service to the PYP teachers to help support their literacy program.

Purpose of the single skills based lesson To provide students with hands-on experience in developing practical skills in theatre, to have some serious fun. To build core theatre skills (confidence, movement, ensemble). The focus on developing key acting and communication abilities through activities like improvisation, character portrayal, and performance techniques. To give students choice & ownership in their performing arts journey. Creating and building their own characters for the stage. Runs parallel to assessed units, but is not graded—focus is ATL growth & skill building. Structure Lessons once in a 10 day cycle except during the assessed unit - The art of storytelling. Focus will be through group, paired and individual exercises to build confidence and develop the practical language of drama. Students will explore stereotypes and characters found in plays and learn to build their own character profile. Based on their knowledge of different characters students will work in pairs to present a clear character for the stage based on their choices. They will perform their character work to practise their skills in class.
The development of their skills based lesson will allow them to create their inquiry questions. These might be: Factual - How do we use character profiles to shape a narrative? Conceptual - How can the way we present different characters help the audience see different points of view? Debatable - Why use techniques to create or reflect our own identity on stage.
Develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding: Discussions about how theatre represents a variety of people. When playing characters or developing characters, we have to consider the genre and style so we are sensitive about how we portray others on stage.
